It is challenging to clearly distinguish the impacts of the optical field and collisional ionization in the evolution of the charge state of a plasma produced when matter interacts with high-intensity laser pulses. In this work, time-dependent calculations of plasma kinetics are used to show that it is possible only when low-density gaseous targets with sufficiently small clusters are used. In the case of Ar plasma, the upper limit of the cluster radius was estimated to be $$R_0 = 0.1 mu$$m.

The experimental program on the JFT-2M tokamak started with the first plasma on April 27, 1983 and was completed in March, 2004. In the series of experiments for 21 years, a lot of significant results leading the fusion energy research and plasma physics have been produced. As the first paper of this special issue on all aspect of JFT-2M, this paper reviews the JFT-2M program.

We have observed strong amplification for the 4d-4p transition of the Ni-like La ions at a wavelength of 8.8nm pumped by a chirped pulse amplificatio Nd:glass laser with an energy of 18 J. In this experiment, laser pulses consist of a pre-pulse and a main pulse with duration of 200ps and 7 ps separated by 250ps. The KeV X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculation indicate that the plasma temperature increasesd effectively by reducing the prepulse intensity, and that the substantial gain is generated in a small overcritical region heated by the electron heat transport.

Polarimetry of the second harmonics generated from laser-cluster interactions in the relativistic regime

The J-KAREN-P laser at the Kansai Photon Science Institute was irradiated to a cluster target and confirmed the second harmonic generation. Polarization measurements of the generated second harmonic revealed that the polarization plane of the component that passed through the laser-generated plasma was rotated. This result suggests that a vortex-like magnetic field centered on the laser axis is generated.
